This week marked the official kickoff for LODESTAR II in Delft, the Netherlands. The project, funded by the European Defence Fund (EDF), aims to enhance the soldier’s situational awareness through the use of augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI).
The name Lodestar refers to a guiding star – a fitting metaphor for a project designed to guide the way towards meeting future operational needs. At its core, LODESTAR II seeks to increase both survivability and effectiveness for the soldier through technological innovation.
A European collaboration
The LODESTAR II consortium brings together leading technology companies from the Netherlands, France, Spain, Lithuania, Croatia, Belgium, and Norway. Each partner contributes complementary skills and products that will be developed and matured over the next 2.5 years, with the aim of delivering a complete and integrated soldier system.
Teleplan Globe’s contribution
Teleplan Globe is contributing with our flagship products FACNAV and FACNAV Mobile. These systems provide the soldier with robust C2 capabilities and serve as a gateway to other soldiers and units.
For example, an observation made by one soldier can instantly be shared on the digital map, ensuring the rest of the unit has access to the same information. Conversely, data from other sources can be visualised directly in the soldier’s weapon sight or head-up display – enabling faster, more informed decisions on the battlefield.
Enabling the future operational capability
LODESTAR II represents an important step towards equipping soldiers with real-time decision support. By combining advanced technology and operational expertise, the project aims to create the next generation of systems that enhance both safety and lethality in the field.
